This is a complex terroir, oriented northwest, made up of small patches of vineyards surrounded by scrublands of pine trees, wild thyme and rosemary, on which grow the 4 varietals of the domaine. Les Fontanilles is a cuvee that combines maturity and freshness and offers a bouquet of red and black fruits, and peppery spices. This wine goes particularly well with grilled meats and barbecues.A vibrant wine.

Guide Parker 2011: 92/100 – The Gros Tollot 2008 Minervois Les Fontanilles projects deep blackberry,blueberry,and mulberry fruit; roasted red meat; pungent herbs; and saliva inducing salinity. A deep suggestion of veal and beef marrow puts me in mind of certain of the best cru Beaujolais,while allusions to shrimp shell reduction further enhance the mouthwatering sense of umami this cuvee projects. Firm, tightly-stitched tannins allied to exuberant,infectious juiciness suggest a wine capable of performing well for the better part of a decade, and an opportunity to play around a bit at table with a bottle of this beauty revealed its versatility. Gros particularly likes the influence of the Cinsault in flavor, texture,and moderation of alcohol and says if she does more planting on sandstone it will be of this variety.

This ought to perform well for at least 5/7 years.

In Vino Veritas Juin 2011: Les 2009 nous ont éblouis. Les Fontanilles, 4 cépages sur une terre de grès, offre une matière entre fraîcheur et chaleur solaire, aux tanins fermes.
Gault Millau 2012: 16/20 On retrouve ici une approche plus languedocienne, sur des notes de thym et de venaison. La bouche campe sur des tanins encore serrés mais qui garantissent, de par leur maturité, un avenir certain à ce flacon.

Plus que moyennement corsé, charnu, plein d’éclat, ses tanins sont aimables. Délicieux. 30 % de ce vin est élevé en fûts, et le reste, en cuves.

This wine is made from a blend of Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, and Syrah from vines between 22 and 50 years of age. Dark in color it has a gorgeous perfume of cassis with a faintly spicy floral undertone. The wine has layers of gorgeous supple fruit that is accented by a faint floral note and a kiss of spice. It is beautifully balanced and seamless with a long finish. This is a really gorgeous wine – Outstanding Plus.
Jacques Benoit- La Presse avril 2013: Ce très beau Minervois, d’Anne Gros et Jean-Paul Tollot, d’une belle couleur foncée, mais sans qu’il soit opaque, brille dès l’abord par la franchise de son bouquet de petits fruits noirs, au boisé de qualité. Bien en chair, relativement corsé, il brille de nouveau, en bouche, par son velouté de texture. Wine Advocate mai 2014: A more serious effort, the 2012 Minervois Les Fontanilles is a knockout blend of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault that has the Syrah and Carignan aged in barrel and the balance in tank. Coming from sandstone and limestone soils, it offers vibrant blue fruits, crushed flowers, big minerality and pepper to go with an energetic, medium-bodied, elegant profile on the palate. I love the overall purity here and while tight and slightly reserved at present, it should evolve gracefully and drink well for over a decade. 92

Another wine that I think is the best to date, the single vineyard 2013 Minervois les Fontanilles comes from sandstone and limestone soils and 25-year-old vines of Syrah and Grenache, and 50-year-old vines of Cinsault and Carignan. The Cinsault and Grenache are brought up in tank, and the Syrah and Carignan in demi-muid. This classic beauty has drop dead gorgeous notes of creme de cassis, black raspberry, caramelized cherries, vanilla bean and a saline-like minerality. Medium to full-bodied, fine, elegant and seamless, with incredible purity, this classy Minervois can be consumed now, or cellared for 5-7 years.

“The 2017 Minervois Les Fontanilles – a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault – comes from a cool, north-facing plot surrounded by garrigue. The wine is medium to full-bodied and supple, with the red-toned fruit picking up hints of resinous herbs, like rosemary and bay leaf, on the finish. Half of the wine was aged in barrel, half in tank, but the wood isn’t particularly prominent, maybe just adding a touch of roundness around the edges and hints of cedar and vanilla on the nose.”

Bright dark purple colour. Pure nose combining ripe plum, cherry and mild oak with a fresh herbal spiciness. Rather ample palate with soft extraction, supple red fruit flavours, peppery and herbal spices with fine oak underneath, nicely balanced with fine length.
